I also got a good part of my film education at The New Yorker; most of the rest came from TVO's Saturday Night at the Movies with Elwy Yost. I love what the Hyland is doing. It's the only movie theatre in London that I go to regularly. Is there curated programming on a similar scale at an independent cinema anywhere else within 100km? Not that I know of, but I'd be glad to hear of it if there is.
OMG. Yes re: Saturday Night at the Movies! That show had a HUGE impact on me. I'm actually working on an art project right now that is heavily influenced by the show.
I think you'd have to go to Guelph to the Bookshelf Cinema for something similar to the Hyland. That's all that comes to mind. Other than that, it's Toronto.
