Love the LOON and thanks for another great column. It's called Banana Kingdom from the early days of Google Maps. If you look at the park, it is in the shape of a banana, with the TVP serving as the seam (or whatever it's called on the fruit). While I am on the board of LCL, I will take a pass on the ride since I can't eat ice cream, chocolate, or bananas :(
I know the banana image is part of the lore. If you see phronk's note, he states the name came before the map image. Who knows?!!
I think you should still go on the ride and forgo the chocolate, ice cream and bananas. Enjoy the company and have a refreshing glass of water! Honestly this LCL ride is such a good idea. Kudos!
And I remember it being called by that name well before that. My best guess is that someone noticed the shape on a map, the name caught on, and eventually the street art followed.

Me too! More on the timeline: I searched my email history and apparently I was sent that image in 2008, but that was the first time I'd heard the name "Banana Kingdom". Also, the graffiti already existed at that time. I still want to know how far back it goes and who named / painted it!
