Being prepared to participate in the upcoming municipal election means being informed — about the issues and about the candidates.
That’s something our team at The Loon has been investing considerable time and expertise in. We believe an informed community is more likely to participate in an election and, importantly, to remain engaged long after the ballots have been counted. It’s an important part of our commitment to community service and one of the reasons the five co-owners of The Loon came together to create a local news service.
We’ve supported the Urban League’s all-candidates debates in each of London’s 14 wards, provided questions for the Rogers TV mayoral debate, and each member of our team has contributed election-related content to The Loon.
As part of that effort, I’m kicking off a new series of Steve’s Reflections featuring conversations with some of the candidates running for mayor of London.
There are 12 candidates for mayor, and while I would have liked the opportunity to speak with all of them, I’ve set aside three sessions for this series. If you’d like to learn more about the full field of candidates, you can also check out the Rogers TV mayoral debate and the City of London’s official list of candidates.
This week, I sat down with current Mayor Josh Morgan, who is seeking another term.
We talked about our city — what’s going well, what needs to improve, what he sees as London’s top priorities over the next four years, and why he believes Londoners should support his candidacy.
It was a freewheeling conversation. I wanted to get beyond the usual sound bites and short answers that so often characterize political interviews. I’ll take the same approach with the other mayoral candidates I speak with.
Those who know me know that I can be a bit wordy! The only editing I’ve done was to remove some of my longer questions so that viewers can focus on what the candidate has to say.
I hope you find the conversation informative. More importantly, I hope this series helps clarify the choices facing London voters and encourages all of us to participate in the municipal election on October 26.
