A Conversation with Susan Stevenson
Being prepared to participate in the upcoming municipal election means being informed – about the issues and about the candidates who are asking for our support.
As I mentioned in my first conversation with a mayoral candidate, our team at The Loon has been putting a lot of time and expertise into helping Londoners become more informed. We believe an informed community is more likely to vote and, perhaps more importantly, to remain engaged in our community long after the election is over.
As part of that commitment, I’m continuing my series of conversations with some of the candidates seeking to become London’s next mayor.
This week, I sat down with Councillor Susan Stevenson, who is completing her first term representing Ward 4 and is running for mayor on a platform she describes as bringing “new leadership” to London.
In this interview, Susan shares why she chose to run for mayor while we also dug into a conversation about some of the key elements of her campaign. So our conversation was about more than individual policies. I wanted to understand what Susan believes needs to change at City Hall, why she believes that change is necessary, and what London might look like under her leadership.
As I did with Josh Morgan, I wanted to get beyond the usual campaign sound bites and short answers that often characterize election interviews. Susan and I had a fairly free-flowing conversation about London, the challenges facing our community and the changes she would like to see.
Those who know me know that I can be a bit wordy, so the only editing I’ve done to the conversation was to remove some of my longer questions and comments so that viewers can focus primarily on what the candidate has to say.
There are 12 candidates for mayor, and while I would have liked the opportunity to speak with all of them, I’ve set aside three sessions for this series. If you’d like to learn more about the full field of candidates, you can also check out the Rogers TV mayoral debate and the City of London’s official list of candidates.
My goal with these conversations isn’t to tell you who to vote for. It’s to give you an opportunity to hear directly from candidates about their priorities, their approach to leadership and the changes they believe London needs.
I hope you find this conversation with Susan informative and that this series helps you think more deeply about the choices you’ll have when you vote on October 26th.
