London’s downtown has been the subject of many debates and several studies. The newest study “Downtown Reimagined: City of London Downtown Plan” was released last week and will be considered by London’s city council later this month. The report is a call to action for a 10-year plan to build on existing infrastructure while also setting course for a more vibrant and stronger downtown.
Early response from London councillors has been generally positive, but there have been some who want to put a hold on downtown improvements until existing social issues related to homelessness are addressed. Can we build a stronger downtown while still facing significant social issues? Are there any lessons learned from previous downtown projects or existing successes?
In this episode of Steve’s Reflections, I highlight a couple of pragmatic approaches that London might consider. Hint: we don’t need to (nor should we) wait until social issues are solved.... BUT, WE DO need to solve those too!
Tackling some smaller projects can build momentum and help us land on the right “big projects” of the future. Iconic fixtures including Canada Life Place, Covent Garden Market and newer gems including London Bicycle Cafe are highlights in the downtown and help create something we can build upon.
