This is a great article. Thankyou for putting the time together to experience London and share your journey.

I know Nan's place well, and lived in Blackfriers for nearly 10 years.

I really liked your summary In part 4. I think the downtown plan is the crux of this election for informed ward 13 voters.

I would encourage them to read it.

I like the ideas of streamlining government, and leaning into the music city identity identified in the plan the most.

We are the forest city, what better place for a cultural hub in Canada? Nature, art, business, citizens working together.

I'm looking forward to the debates this weekend and meeting more of London.

Www.andrewcrook.ca for those interested in me 😀

I should probably update this substack profile too, lol. This is my independent research and writing account, but politics has a way of drawing it all in :)

Great tour of Ward 13.

But this ward also gives London an opportunity to ask some harder questions.

Downtown has had plans, strategies, studies, programs, incentives, public-space projects, homelessness responses and redevelopment proposals for years.

Now we have another 10-year Downtown Plan with 58 actions.

Before we measure the next idea, can we measure the pile?

What has London already spent downtown over the last 10 or 20 years?

Which programs worked?

Which didn't?

What were the original targets?

Were those targets achieved?

Which programs were supposed to be temporary but became permanent?

How much annual operating cost has accumulated?

How much new staffing comes with the new plan?

What existing programs will be replaced rather than simply added to?

Who is responsible for each of the 58 actions?

What happens if an action fails?

When does Council stop funding something that isn't producing results?

How will we measure downtown vacancy?
